CHR&R Data Updates
County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (CHR&R) topics will no longer be updated.
To continue to provide high-quality updated data, Metopio will now curate these topics from the original sources whenever possible. The list below includes the new data sources and any additions to the original topic.
Social Membership Associations measures membership in civic, sports, religious, political, or professional organizations per 10,000 people. This topic is sourced from County Business Patterns and now includes ZIP code data, in addition to counties, states, and US data.
School Segregation Index measures how much a public-school population diverges from a reference population. The index is calculated by Metopio using Thiel’s H and data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). School district data is now available in addition to county, state, and US data.
Alcohol-Involved Crash Fatalities is the percentage of motor vehicle crash fatalities in which someone involved in the crash had a blood alcohol level of at least 0.01. The historical data has been extended to include 2009-2023 and many new topics from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) have been added.
Residential Segregation uses an index of dissimilarity to measure racial segregation between Black and White residents, with 0 indicating complete integration and 100 indicating complete segregation. This measure is calculated based on ACS data and is now available at a census tract level, in addition to county, state, and US.
Severe Housing Problems measures the percentage of households having at least one of the following housing problems: lacking complete kitchen facilities, lacking complete plumbing, more than 1.5 persons per room, or cost burden over 50%. This topic is from Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS) and now includes race/ethnicity stratifications.
Juvenile Court Case Rate (renamed from Juvenile Arrests) is the count of juvenile court cases in which a definite action, such as a plan of treatment, has been taken because of a referral. This topic is now sourced from State and County Juvenile Court Case Counts.
Food Environment Index is calculated with Metopio’s custom index builder using food desert and food insecurity topics. The index is presented on a scale of 0 (worst food environment) to 100 (best food environment).
Child Mortality Rate measures the number of deaths for individuals under age 18 per 100,000 population, a slight change from the age 20 threshold used by CHR&R. The data is from CDC WONDER data and now includes race/ethnicity, sex, and age stratifications.
Life Expectancy shows life expectancy at birth or at the start of the specified age bracket (when stratified by age). The estimation is based on mortality conditions during the measurement period. Life expectancy is calculated using mortality counts from CDC WONDER and population counts from U.S. Census Bureau and now includes age, sex, and race/ethnicity stratifications.
Self-Reported Fair or Poor Health is the percentage of adults who answered “Fair” or “Poor” when asked: "Would you say that in general your health is: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Or Poor?" Data is now available for census tracts, place, MSA, county, state, and US.
In some cases, Metopio was unable to find a direct replacement for CHR&R topics, but viable alternatives have been added to the platform.
Per-Pupil Expenditure, shown in dollars per student, is the total current spending on elementary and secondary education divided by fall student enrollment. This topic is from Common Core of Data can be used in place of School Funding Adequacy from CHR&R. This topic contains school district, county, state, and US layers.
Reading Proficiency is the percentage of all students who scored proficient or above on their statewide reading/language arts assessment. This topic is from U.S. Department of Education and can be used in place of Third grade reading scores from CHR&R. School district, county, state, and US layers are included.
Access to Parks is the percentage of residents living near a publicly accessible park. This topic is from National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network and includes stratifications for ½ mile or 1 mile distance to the park. It can be used in place of Exercise opportunities from CHR&R.
It was not possible to directly replace the following CHR&R topics. They are currently deprecated and will be removed from the Metopio database in the coming months.
Excessive Drinking. We recommend using Binge Drinking (BNG) instead.
Poor Physical Health Days. We recommend Self-Reported Poor Physical Health (PPH) instead.
Poor Mental Health Days. We recommend Self-Reported Poor Mental Health (PMH) instead.
