The rest of this guide will walk you though the steps to upload your data to ensure that it will function on the Metopio platform along with Metopio curated data.
We only accept geographical data : every data point is about a single geographic place. A place is uniquely identified by its geographic layer and its GEOID . The GEOID is usually a FIPS code or other government-determined ID for the geography, like the postal code for states. You do not need to create or define places; you just need to know their layers and GEOIDs.
Do not upload any personally-identifiable information (PII or PHI). Metopio is built for geographic data, not individual data. This site is not HIPAA-compliant because it is not intended to handle data protected by HIPAA.
Take these steps to convert PII into acceptable data:
Group the data by a geographic identifier , such as ZIP code, county, or state.
For health information or other sensitive data, you likely need to suppress (delete) data points reflecting a small number of people . Our guideline is to suppress any protected health information about fewer than 5 people. (Values of 0 are okay.)
Suppress data points with a very small denominator or population-at-risk (our guideline is 50 people). This protects privacy: even if you follow step #2, if the data point is about a place with 3 inhabitants, the data point is too sensitive.
Take any other necessary steps to protect personal information. This may include suppressing data points that are too variable/uncertain, ensuring that demographic breakdowns don’t give away too much information, and using stricter standards for especially sensitive data such as HIV-positive status.
Follow all applicable laws and regulations about your data.
When you upload data, you will be asked to confirm that you have permission to upload it, and that it does not include PII.
